Exit slips and essential questions

get students to submit short summary sentences... what they learnt... b4 they can leave the class?
3 things i learned, 2 questions i have, 1 thing i really enjoyed? etc

Good essential questions are broadly applicable: eg
What are the elements of good governance in Singapore?

vs.
What are the elements are good governance?  <-- broader

Gets to the heart of deep understanding:
e.g. how does globalization affect your daily life? 

E.g.  What does it mean to be a Singaporean? 
rephrase the essential qn to: What does it mean to feel a sense of belonging to a nation? , sub set qn: How does this apply to Singapore? 

Avoid forming question that lead to: Yes/ No answers.
Qn should elicit thought, analysis

Extend the understanding of concepts to essential questions (Structure of  knowledge)
