I do see and appreciate the drawbacks - games with good content and storyline to hook the student can potentially also be addicting (something I will attest to :p)
Still, I see opportunities especially in Social studies. Wonder if I can get a school here to fork out 80 Euros for Global Conflicts series of games. Lots of freebies out there anyway and I think I just found a gem at Games for Change. These games are asynchronous in nature, thus allowing a student to proceed at an comfortable pace and promotes critical thinking when I have them reflect on the outcomes of the games. Could be interesting for the kids to map out a game of their own...

I am sure there can be a study on social injustices in a typical D&D game! :P
hey, I learned a lot from D&D, especially as a DM... public speaking, planning, problem solving, on the spot thinking...
Not to forget geography, history and anthropology while creating a world for adventuring, and management skills when you have some weird players in your gaming group...
