Transfer
We can transfer and integrate media techniques to print text
We can transfer and integrate writing in the process of media integration
expose students to different types of stills with lighting that establishes a mood.
Camera angles -long /medium /close up
medium - defined as btw medium and close up has multiple perspectives.shots generated .
In English we want them to read mood. How would we use different angles to depict mood of character, setting, etc?
Synthesis of Media and Text - show media (video clip) - then identify the media techniques (camera angles/lighting) to analyze character traits, feelings, mood, settings found in print through a storyboarding activity.
Groups present the storyboards and justify their analysis and conclusions drawn.
Bring these techniques back to language skill development
and this should lead into writing, e.g. an extension of the storyline from different POVs
For students of 'lower' academic activity, change the resource to engage your students - keep the techniques and follow up/through.
Eg. Upper Secondary/CSI
- show clip, identify media techniques of lighting and camera shots to print text, then create storyboard. Focus on one investigator depicted in a chapter - analyze the print text with focus on actions and thoughts of character, create a 3-5 frame storyboard.
additional resource: information about tools used in forensic science.
Students could also play a related PC game.
This leads into writing a csi-like investigative story using the linguistic features, vocabulary and specialized terminology learned over this two to three week period.
-----
Art - to teach inferential skills which can lead into writing
Again keep it simple -
1. Repetition in art - artists repeat ideas and images to draw our attention to a point, to emphasize an idea/issue.
2. juxtaposition - to highlight a paradox or a point
3. symbolism - what do depictions represent?
4. context - text are written in historical time period; containing ideologies or political belief systems. Explore themes in images over time and context. Women/gender status or place in society

--------------
Using what they learn in the interpretation of art and tv, look for the same clues in print text.
Where do they see repetition, symbolism, context in their readings? How is mood and feeling conveyed through description of setting, colours etc?
----------------
print text can be mono-modal, bi-modal, multi-modal
eg. movie posters, bill boards - bi modal (words + still visuals)
non print text - media forms other than plain word form. silent movies, films, tv serials, pod cast. etc. can be mono-modal (silent movie), bi modal (moving pix/visuals with sound), multi modal
